“IT’S ABOUT time that we provide sufficient medical supplies and equipment for our less fortunate cabalens. A single session using a dialysis machine costs about P2,800 to P5,000 nowadays and I think a patient needs to undergo the procedure at least twice a week.”
Thus Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan rationalizes his mission to the United States starting today to procure for the city hospital medical equipment, principally dialysis machines, from the World Medical Relief Inc. which is based in Detroit, Michigan.
Dialysis machines have become most sought-after life-sustaining mechanisms in the past few years but are way beyond the reach of the poor segment of the population due to the prohibitive charges for the sessions.
Easy access to health care for all Angelenos. That was not a simple campaign promise of Pamintuan’s. It is deeply ingrained in him, integral in his social conscientization. This finding manifestation in his other health priorities.
Aside from the procurement of medical equipment, a wider distribution of health insurance cards for the residents, “the poorest of the poor, foremost” is being pursued by the Pamintuan administration.
“I would like to see at least 80 percent of Angelenos being Philhealth (Philippine Health Insurance) card holders.” So vowed the mayor.
Yet another boost to the state of health of the city is the endeavor to transform the Ospital Ning Angeles (ONA) from a secondary medical care provider to a tertiary hospital, providing patients with expanded diagnostic and intensive care services.
“With the support we are getting from the city government, we are most certain of attaining this goal, and become a training hospital too.” So said Dr. Antonio Dizon, ONA chief.
The total well-being of his constituents. Yet another Pamintuan promise being delivered.
With their mayor as principal caregiver, the Angeleños could not have been happier. And healthier.
