…Undelivered

THAT WAS candidate Aquino then. This is President Aquino now.

Huge cuts are poised on the budgets of different state universities and colleges (SUCs) for academic year 2011-12, so media reports hold.

The University of the Philippines budget would be cut by P1.39 billion, from P6.9 billion in 2010 to P5.5 in 2011.

The Philippine Normal University will get a P92-million reduction, from P387 million this year to P296 million next academic year.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines gets a P150-million budget cut from P819 million in 2009 to P672 million in 2011.

And those are but the top three SUCs in the country. Pity the lesser SUCs in the provinces, like our own Pampanga Agricultural College and the Don Honorio Ventura Technical State University.

With these cuts, affordable quality education will become more inaccessible to poor but deserving Filipino youth.

One more election promise undelivered for Aquino there. Just like his election vow of “No New Taxes” finding negation with the toll tax,

Come to think of it: Wasn’t the martyred Ninoy Aquino, as senator, the very author of the Study Now, Pay Later Law that empowered generations of poor Filipino students?

So what’s happened to this son of his?
