AUF lauded for promoting Chinese language, culture
Mar 10, 2010
ANGELES CITY – “Angeles University Foundation has the passion, interest and commitment in promoting Chinese culture.”
Thus said Hu Yu, also known as Yokie, a volunteer teacher from Fujian Normal University (FNU), who was asked by Punto why she chose to teach Chinese language at AUF.
Yokie says to be a Chinese language teacher, “one must have a passion and love for the language that one teaches.”
“If you know Chinese language better, you will know China better and win new friends,” she says.
After meeting foreign students in China, Yokie found out that more people including businessmen are eager to learn the Chinese language.
Sun Zhongwang or Sean, also one of the nine volunteer teachers at the Confucius Institute at AUF, says that AUF encourages its students to be open minded, globally competitive and interested in sharing the Chinese language to everyone.
He says, a lot of people in the world want to learn the Chinese language but do not have the opportunity to do so. They want to attend classes, but no teachers are available to teach Mandarin.
It is estimated that more than 40 million people outside China are studying Mandarin. The figure is expected to reach 100 million this year and so the demand for Chinese language teachers is also expected to rise.
Anyone can be a Chinese language teacher but one must undergo training and must pass a stringent selection process by the Chinese Language Council International or Hanban, Sean adds.
After a meeting with school officials recently, Sean and Yokie said future projects for the CI-AUF are now being discussed in the areas of instruction, research, culture and the arts.
They said one of the plans is to train Filipino teachers to teach Chinese so that once they are capable already, there is no need to get teachers from China.”
CI-AUF is also planning to offer Bachelor of Science in Education major in Chinese language teaching staring June this year.
